Danni Wyatt-Hodge turned England’s final group match into a statement chase as New Zealand’s Women’s T20 World Cup defence ended at The Oval.
England won by nine wickets, reaching 164-1 after New Zealand had posted 163-6. The result kept the hosts perfect through the group stage and removed the defending champions from the tournament.
Wyatt-Hodge finished unbeaten on 89 and was named player of the match, giving England’s semi-final push another sharp top-order marker. Amy Jones helped launch the reply before falling for 17, while Sophia Dunkley then carried the chase home alongside Wyatt-Hodge with 49 not out.
New Zealand’s farewell turns painful
New Zealand had enough runs to ask a question, with Melie Kerr making 42 and Sophie Devine adding 30, but England’s fielding and middle-over control squeezed the innings. Dani Gibson removed Kerr and Bree Illing in the same passage, while Lauren Bell dismissed Devine before the late push.
The night also carried a heavy emotional edge. Devine, Suzie Bates and Lea Tahuhu received a guard of honour at the end of their international careers, but New Zealand left knowing their title defence had collapsed before the knockouts.
For England, the more important signal is competitive rhythm. A crowd of more than 21,000, reported as the biggest attendance for a women’s T20 group game, saw a chase that rarely looked stressed once Wyatt-Hodge found tempo.
It follows ReadCricket’s earlier coverage of New Zealand’s semi-final pressure and the Nat Sciver-Brunt absence. England now move into the semi-finals with momentum, depth and a top order that has stopped waiting for the captain to solve everything.
