  • West Indies begin their home season against Sri Lanka in Jamaica
  • Kusal Mendis and Jayden Seales headline the key player battle
  • Sri Lanka tipped to edge a crucial World Cup qualifying contest

The West Indies launch their 2026 home season on Wednesday when they face Sri Lanka in the opening ODI at Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica.

With all three matches of the series set to be played at the same venue, both teams know a strong start could shape the outcome of what promises to be a fiercely contested battle. The series also carries added significance as nations begin to strengthen their positions ahead of qualification for the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup.

West Indies return to ODI action for the first time since suffering a 3-0 series defeat in New Zealand last November. Sri Lanka arrive in the Caribbean after a narrow 2-1 ODI series loss to England earlier this year and will be aiming to begin their multi-format tour on a winning note.

Sabina Park returns to the ODI spotlight

Sabina Park hosts its first ODI since 2022 when West Indies endured a disappointing series defeat to Ireland at the same ground.

The Jamaica venue has developed a reputation for producing slower surfaces where patience is often rewarded. Batters are expected to spend time adjusting to the conditions before looking to accelerate, while forecast cloud cover could offer valuable assistance to seam bowlers with the new ball.

Recent history suggests run scoring may not come easily, making partnerships and disciplined bowling likely to prove decisive factors.

Kusal Mendis arrives in red hot form

Much of Sri Lanka’s hopes will rest on the shoulders of captain Kusal Mendis, who enters the series after a remarkable Pakistan Super League campaign.

The experienced right hander finished as the second highest run scorer in the tournament with 550 runs at an average of 55 and a strike rate above 168. He is also just 110 runs away from reaching the landmark of 5,000 ODI runs.

Alongside Mendis, Sri Lanka boast an impressive line up featuring Pathum Nissanka, Charith Asalanka and Kamindu Mendis. Their bowling attack also looks well equipped for Caribbean conditions with Wanindu Hasaranga, Maheesh Theekshana and Dilshan Madushanka all expected to play leading roles.

West Indies seek a winning start at home

Led by Shai Hope, West Indies will be eager to make home advantage count after a difficult run in ODI cricket.

The hosts possess significant firepower through Keacy Carty, Shimron Hetmyer and Sherfane Rutherford, while their pace attack is capable of exploiting any assistance on offer from the surface.

One player attracting particular attention is Jayden Seales. The fast bowler enjoyed an outstanding domestic campaign, claiming 23 wickets in just four matches to help Trinidad and Tobago secure the West Indies Championship title. He also impressed during the New Zealand tour, taking six wickets across three ODIs.

Key players to watch

Kusal Mendis

Sri Lanka’s captain enters the series carrying exceptional form and confidence. His ability to control an innings while maintaining a healthy scoring rate could prove vital on a challenging batting surface.

Jayden Seales

The West Indies quick has momentum behind him following an impressive domestic season. If conditions favour seam movement, Seales could become the biggest threat to Sri Lanka’s batting order.

Match prediction

Both sides possess quality and match winners throughout their line ups, but Sri Lanka appear slightly better prepared heading into the series opener.

Their batting unit looks more settled and the presence of experienced spin options could become increasingly important as the match progresses.

Prediction: Sri Lanka to win the 1st ODI.
