- Ireland top Tri-Nations series after four games
- Captain Prendergast stars with bat and ball
- Ireland’s first win over West Indies in T20I
Ireland Women’s captain Orla Prendergast starred with bat and ball as she led Ireland to their first ever T20I win over the West Indies. The win came in the Tri-Nation series and moved Ireland to the top.
West Indies Women batted first in Dublin, after winning the toss. However, that wasn’t the best decision as Ireland soon reduced them to 53-4. Ava Canning took the important wickets of Hayley Matthews (1) and Qiana Joseph (12) in the first two overs.
When Stafanie Taylor retired hurt after running two runs, her side were effectively 53-5. However, 44-run partnership between Shemaine Campbelle (21) and Jannillea Glasgow (36) saw them reach 141-8.
Canning ended with 2-11 from her four overs, and Prendergast took 2-26.
Bad weather stopped play
The Irish run chase started very badly. Alana Dalzell (0) and Arlene Kelly (1) were both out in the first over with the score on 3, bowled by Shawnisha Hector. Ireland managed to steady the ship with a partnership of 57 between Prendergast and Rebecca Stokell (12) took the score to 60-3. Another couple of quick wickets brought Ireland back in check.
First, Leah Paul (1) was out to the bowling of Hayley Matthews, and then Alice Tector was run out for 3. This brought Louise Little to the wicket, and Prendergast (71*) and Little (9*) got the score to 99-5, when bad weather stopped play. At this point, thanks to Little hitting the first ball of the 14th over for four pushed Ireland ahead of the DRS score of 98.
Unfortunately, the bad weather meant that play had to be abandoned, and with Ireland one run ahead of the DRS score, they were declared the winners. Prendergast’s innings of 71 off 46 balls contributed 72% of Ireland’s total runs. Her strike rate of 154.33 also meant Ireland kept up with the run rate.
