- Gavaskar told Sooryavanshi to “keep going” before the match.
- RR star broke Chris Gayle’s IPL sixes record.
Before Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad’s IPL 2026 Eliminator match, Sunil Gavaskar shared what he said to Vaibhav Sooryavanshi during their widely shared heartfelt moment.
With his amazing 29-ball 97 versus SRH, Sooryavanshi grabbed the stage and led his team to Qualifier 2. Before the game started, the adolescent wonder approached Gavaskar and caressed his feet, aside from his batting. Before the game, Sooryavanshi made a gesture that combined respect and humility to create an unforgettable experience.
The young RR opener went to the broadcast set during the warm-ups and touched the feet of former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar and batting legend Sunil Gavaskar while they were on television to beg for blessings.

Sunil Gavaskar shares special advice after touching moment
Everyone in the presentation area was pleasantly pleased by the unexpected act, which soon emerged as one of the evening’s most memorable off-field highlights. Gavaskar was asked what he would say to the boy wonder, and he replied that he would advise him to keep going, something he told the boy wonder during their brief meeting.
“What I would say to him is exactly what I said to him yesterday when he came just before the match, and we were doing a show on the ground. When he came and he touched my feet and I and all I said to him was, ‘lage raho bete, lage raho, (keep going, keep going)‘ and that is exactly what I would say if I was batting with him down the other end,” said Gavaskar.

Sooryavanshi has already had an incredible IPL 2026 season, smashing Chris Gayle’s record for the most sixes by a batter in a single campaign with 680 runs. Is he going to be the next greatthing in Indian cricket? Based on his experiences with RR over the past two seasons, Gavaskar believes such is the case.
“He certainly promises to be that from what we’ve seen, because, for somebody to be playing the kind of shots that he is playing, or the comfort level that he’s playing, it means that he’s somebody really, really special,” said Gavaskar.
On Friday, May 29, Sooryavanshi will return to action as RR takes on GT in Qualifier 2.
