  • Teenager scored explosive 97 runs from only 29 deliveries.

During the Rajasthan Royals’ Eliminator match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Wednesday, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi broke Chris Gayle’s long-standing record for the most sixes in a single season, continuing his incredible climb in the Indian Premier League.

The 15-year-old opener finished another incredible show of power hitting by smashing his 61st six of IPL 2026, surpassing Gayle’s long-standing total of 59 from the 2012 season. The landmark was achieved with typical Sooryavanshi fearlessness and relentlessness. After first equaling Gayle’s record, the teenager then overtook it in just three deliveries against Sakib Hussain.

Sooryavanshi cleared extra-cover with ease when Sakib pitched the slower ball outside off. As the bowler went short on the next delivery, the RR batter smashed his season’s 61st six behind square. In a high-stress Eliminator, Sooryavanshi reached his half-century off just 16 balls with the third six of the over, and the Rajasthan Royals quickly reached 63 for no loss in four overs.

Sunrisers Hyderabad had a well-thought-out strategy going into the match against the teenager. In an attempt to prevent Sooryavanshi from having space to release his arms, Pat Cummins began by targeting fields and bowling at yorker length. After the young player settled in, the field changed from deep square leg and deep midwicket to long-on and deep midwicket.

Cummins carried out his strategy well for the majority of the first over. Just a single came from three deliveries on a fairly full length, but the one ball he underpitched was punished right away. Leaning into the slot delivery, Sooryavanshi lofted it cleanly over mid-off for six. A similar experience was shared by Eshan Malinga on the other side. Surprisingly, SRH chose to give Malinga the ball instead of Praful Hinge.

Before missing his yorker on the last delivery of the over, the Sri Lankan bowler produced five controlled balls. Sooryavanshi pounced when the intended full ball became an in-swinging full toss and hooked it over backward square leg for another six.
