- Riyan Parag guided Rajasthan Royals into the IPL playoffs
- RR captain battled criticism injuries and controversy this season
- Kumar Sangakkara strongly defended Parag after playoff qualification
Riyan Parag has spent much of his IPL career fighting noise. Criticism trolling and relentless scrutiny have followed the Rajasthan Royals captain for years but in IPL 2026 the 24-year-old has finally begun reshaping the conversation around him.
Rajasthan’s dramatic push into the playoffs has become as much about Parag’s resilience as the team’s performances on the field. In his first full season as captain the Assam cricketer has carried expectation pressure and controversy while guiding the Royals into the top four.
For a player often branded arrogant because of his confidence and outspoken personality this season has become a powerful response.
Rajasthan Royals stood firmly behind Parag
Parag joined Rajasthan Royals in 2019 and endured years of criticism over inconsistent numbers and unrealised promise. Even during difficult seasons though the franchise hierarchy continued to back him publicly and privately.
That trust became even more significant when the Royals handed him the captaincy following Sanju Samson’s departure ahead of senior names including Dhruv Jurel Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ravindra Jadeja.
Head coach Kumar Sangakkara delivered perhaps the strongest defence yet of his captain after Rajasthan secured their playoff berth in Mumbai.
“I think I’ve seen very few players who have been criticised like Riyan has for about seven years now. He is the absolute right guy to lead this franchise,” Sangakkara said after the win.

How Riyan Parag silenced critics in IPL 2026
Parag’s rise has hardly been smooth. His breakthrough IPL season in 2024 saw him score 573 runs at a strike rate close to 150 after moving to No. 4 in the batting order.
That campaign earned him an India call-up but injuries soon interrupted his progress. A chronic shoulder problem eventually required surgery and stalled his momentum just as he appeared set to establish himself at international level.
This IPL season brought fresh challenges. A lean run of scores early in the tournament increased scrutiny before social media criticism intensified after Parag was caught vaping in the dressing room during a televised moment.
At the same time Rajasthan’s season was beginning to unravel.
Parag however refused to retreat publicly. While accepting responsibility for the team’s performances he also criticised commentators and experts for what he felt were personal attacks directed at players.
As the tournament progressed his form improved but another setback arrived in the shape of a hamstring injury that forced him to miss two matches.
Fearless captaincy helped RR reach the playoffs
Parag returned for Rajasthan’s must-win clash against Mumbai Indians despite not being fully fit and his leadership decisions proved decisive.
He promoted Jofra Archer up the batting order in a bold tactical move before later reintroducing the England fast bowler to break the dangerous partnership between Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav.
Those aggressive calls reflected the style of captaincy Parag believes in.
“I have taken a lot of brave calls actually this season. That’s how I like to lead. That’s how I lead Assam as well,” Parag said after the victory.
“You got to take your chances, it’s not a gamble.”

The work ethic behind Parag’s rise
Those who have worked with Parag closely insist his public image often fails to capture the discipline behind the scenes.
A member of India’s victorious Under-19 World Cup squad alongside Shubman Gill and Prithvi Shaw Parag impressed coaches early with his work ethic and natural striking ability.
One coach from his India Under-19 days described him as misunderstood rather than difficult.
“He is a very nice boy. He won’t stand in front of you with folded hands but diligently do what is asked of him in practice,” the coach said.
“He is a special cricketer with the bat in hand and has the natural ability of hitting huge sixes. He has not realised his potential yet and he knows that.”
Why Parag’s story is changing in IPL 2026
Parag still divides opinion but IPL 2026 may ultimately be remembered as the season where perception slowly began to shift.
Rajasthan Royals have not simply found a captain willing to absorb pressure. They have found one prepared to confront it head on.
At 24 Parag remains far from the finished product but his ability to carry criticism while leading a high-profile IPL side into the playoffs has added a new dimension to his reputation.
For years he was social media’s favourite target. Now he is becoming one of Rajasthan Royals’ most important figures.
