There are explosive T20 innings and then there are nights that completely redefine what feels possible in the format. Somerset’s astonishing assault on Derbyshire in the 2022 Vitality Blast quarter-final belonged firmly in the second category.
On a breathless evening at Taunton the hosts hammered 265-5, the highest score ever recorded in Vitality Blast history, before dismissing Derbyshire for just 74 to complete a staggering 191-run victory.
It was not merely domination. It was destruction on an industrial scale. View the full scorecard here.
Rossouw and Banton launched the carnage
Somerset’s innings exploded into life through the brutal hitting of Rilee Rossouw and Tom Banton, who tore into Derbyshire’s attack from the outset.
Rossouw was breathtaking. The South African left-hander smashed 93 from only 36 deliveries with seven sixes and eight fours in one of the most ferocious innings the Blast has seen.
Alongside him Banton produced a superb 73 from 41 balls as the pair added 102 for the second wicket in little more than eight overs. Derbyshire’s bowlers searched desperately for answers but Taunton’s short boundaries and Somerset’s fearless intent created a perfect storm.
Even when chances appeared Derbyshire could not capitalise, with Banton dropped on 29 during the onslaught.

The over that changed Vitality Blast history
Every record-breaking innings has a defining moment and Somerset’s arrived in the 15th over.
Spinner Mattie McKiernan was handed the ball to Rossouw and what followed became instant Blast folklore. Rossouw launched five sixes and a four while also collecting two from a no-ball as the over disappeared for 34 runs.
The extraordinary assault stunned the crowd and left McKiernan with unwanted history. His figures of 0-82 became the most expensive four-over spell ever recorded in men’s T20 cricket.
Yet Somerset were still accelerating.
Tom Lammonby arrived late in the innings and immediately unleashed another brutal assault, smashing 31 from just nine deliveries including a savage sequence of 4, 4, 6, 4, 6 in a single over.
Ben Green then struck a late six that carried Somerset beyond Birmingham Bears’ previous Blast record of 261-2.
By the close of the innings Somerset had hammered 40 boundaries including 18 sixes and 22 fours.
The highest-ever Vitality Blast cricket score crushed Derbyshire
Chasing 266 required something extraordinary from Derbyshire but the enormity of the target quickly overwhelmed them.
The Falcons crumbled to 74 all out in only 11.2 overs as Somerset’s bowlers completed a ruthless all-round performance. Ben Green and Peter Siddle claimed three wickets each while Craig Overton chipped in with two more.
Derbyshire’s miserable evening summed itself up in a chaotic sequence involving McKiernan, who suffered a calamitous run-out before later skying a catch to Green.
Only George Scrimshaw emerged with significant credit after returning impressive figures of 2-16 during the carnage.

Why Somerset’s record still stands apart
T20 cricket has become increasingly dominated by massive totals and fearless batting but Somerset’s 265-5 remains one of the format’s defining innings because of its relentless nature.
There was no slowdown. No quiet passage of play. Every over seemed to bring another wave of boundaries.
Rossouw supplied the fireworks. Banton maintained the pressure. Lammonby and Green delivered the finishing blows.
Most remarkably of all this was achieved in a high-pressure quarter-final with a place at Finals Day on the line.
Somerset had finished runners-up the previous season and this performance felt like a statement of intent to the rest of the competition.
On one unforgettable night at Taunton they did more than just win a match. They produced the highest-ever Vitality Blast cricket score and created a T20 spectacle that still echoes through the competition today.
