The 2026 Vitality T20 Blast roared into life with fireworks across the country as defending champions Somerset wasted little time reminding the rest of the competition exactly why they remain the team to beat.
A packed opening night delivered towering sixes dramatic collapses and standout individual performances with several early contenders already laying down serious markers for the summer ahead. See all of the full scorecards here.
Somerset make a statement on opening night
Somerset picked up where they left off last season with an emphatic seven wicket victory over Hampshire Hawks at Taunton.
Will Smeed once again proved the driving force behind Somerset’s explosive batting display smashing 59 from only 29 balls in a breathtaking innings that set the tone for the evening.
His opening stand of 90 with Tom Banton effectively took the game away from Hampshire before James Rew calmly guided the champions home with an unbeaten 47.
Earlier Hampshire captain James Vince battled hard for his 58 but disciplined bowling from Craig Overton and Jake Ball restricted the visitors to 158 all out.
For a side chasing back to back titles it was the perfect opening statement.

Bairstow inspires Yorkshire to strong start
Yorkshire enjoyed one of the standout victories of the evening after chasing down 168 against Notts Outlaws at Trent Bridge.
Jonny Bairstow delivered a commanding unbeaten 83 while James Wharton added 55 in a superb partnership that rescued Yorkshire after an early wobble left them struggling at 11 for two.
The victory will raise hopes among Yorkshire supporters that this could finally be the season they challenge seriously for a first ever domestic T20 crown.
Surrey and Kent light up the south
Surrey wasted no time flexing their batting strength with a dominant victory over Lancashire Lightning at the Kia Oval.
Jason Roy launched the innings in brutal fashion with 45 from only 19 balls while Tom Curran’s unbeaten late assault powered Surrey to 213 for six. Lancashire never recovered from a disastrous start and eventually folded for 154.
At Lord’s Kent Spitfires captain Sam Billings produced one of the innings of the night blasting 84 not out against Middlesex. His innings packed with boundaries helped Kent post an imposing total before the visitors closed out a comfortable win.
Gloucestershire stun Warwickshire
One of the biggest surprises from the opening round came in Bristol where Gloucestershire dismantled Warwickshire Bears in spectacular style.
Despite posting only 121 themselves Gloucestershire ripped through the Bears batting order which collapsed for just 74. Debutant Duan Jansen starred with four wickets in a remarkable first appearance that transformed the contest.
Warwickshire never looked settled during the chase and their heavy defeat leaves plenty of questions heading into the next round of fixtures.

T20 Blast Round-up delivers instant drama
Elsewhere Durham edged a tense contest against Derbyshire Falcons after England seamer Matthew Potts nailed a superb final ball yorker to deny the visitors a dramatic tie.
Northamptonshire Steelbacks squeezed past Glamorgan in another thriller while Sussex Sharks chased down Essex comfortably thanks to a stunning power hitting display from John Simpson.
If opening night proved anything it is that this season’s competition promises entertainment at every turn. The quality on display combined with fearless batting and relentless pace bowling suggests another unforgettable summer of T20 cricket is already underway.
