  • 47 players have at least one IPL season with 500+ runs.
  • The 500-run barrier has been crossed 99 times so far in 19 seasons.
  • Only three players have won the Orange Cap multiple times in the IPL.

Several batters have made quite the mark in the Indian Premier League (IPL) over its 19 seasons so far. With runs flowing off the blade, the 500-run mark has been an interesting indicator of success over the years.

There have been 99 500-run IPL seasons in total, as of this article being written. 47 players have scored 500+ runs in at least one season of the IPL. Today, however, we look at players with plenty of 500-run seasons.

Top 3 players with the most 500-run seasons in the IPL

In this article, we look at the three players with the most 500-run campaigns in the IPL.

David Warner – 7 seasons

Australian opener David Warner has crossed the 500-run mark on seven occasions in the IPL. Six of them came with Sunrisers Hyderabad, amassing 500+ in each season he was a part of between 2014 and 2020. The left-hander would miss out in 2018, owing to a one-year ban imposed by Cricket Australia over his involvement in ‘Sandpapergate’.

He also holds the record for winning the most Orange Caps in the IPL (for most runs in a season) with three to his name. Warner would walk away with the most runs in the 2015 (562), 2017 (641) and 2019 (692) seasons.

However, his own most prolific season came in the 2016 campaign, where he didn’t win the Orange Cap. Warner scored 848 runs that year as SRH lifted the title. It is worth noting that, at that point, the 2016 Orange Cap winner, who we will address later in the article, was the only player to have amassed a higher total in a single season. In fact, only Shubman Gill (890 in 2023) and Jos Buttler (863 in 2022) have scored more since.

Warner would also score 516 runs in his penultimate IPL campaign in 2023 with the Delhi Capitals.

KL Rahul – 8 seasons

Indian wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul has been among the most consistent batters in IPL history. Starting 2018, Rahul has crossed the 500-run mark in each season where he has been available throughout, only missing out when he was injured for a part of the tournament in 2023. In those eight seasons, however, he has won the Orange Cap in only the 2020 campaign with Kings XI Punjab.

Rahul entered the top 5 all-time highest run-scores in the competition during this campaign (5755 as of this writing). In fact, Rahul’s six hundreds in the IPL are only bettered by Virat Kohli (9) and Jos Buttler (7).

The flamboyant opener is the only batter to have registered multiple 500+ campaigns with more than one team, and he’s done it with three. Punjab Kings, Lucknow Super Giants and Delhi Capitals.

And while this season is nearly 140 runs short of being his most prolific, his strike rate of 171.9 is his highest yet in a single campaign.

Virat Kohli – 9 seasons

Lists like these are generally incomplete without mentioning the highest run-getter of all-time in the IPL. Virat Kohli. The Royal Challengers Bengaluru loyalist has crossed the 500-run mark on nine occasions in his career, including this season.

Kohli also holds the record for most runs in a single season of the IPL – a gargantuan 973 in 2016. Strangely enough though, his current run of four is his longest run of 500+ seasons. Given his consistent nature, the number of relatively bad campaigns stand out.

That said, this recent run of successful seasons for RCB have reflected in his form too. In fact, he crossed the 9000-run mark in his IPL career only earlier this year. And now, he finds himself nearly 2000 runs ahead of his closest competition in Rohit Sharma. Kohli’s nine IPL hundreds are also the most of all players to play in the competition. He is also one of just three players with multiple Orange Caps (Chris Gayle – 2, David Warner – 3).

With an IPL title to his name finally, Kohli seems to now be playing with the freedom of a bird in flight. Just how far that takes him on the run charts remains to be seen.
