- Paras Mhambrey defends Deepak Chahar after dropped catch incident
- Chahar and Ryan Rickelton collide attempting difficult catch
- Mumbai Indians suffered ninth defeat of IPL 2026 season
In the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 match against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), bowling coach Paras Mhambrey of the Mumbai Indians (MI) defended Deepak Chahar.
Chahar had lost a catch and almost dropped another after colliding with wicketkeeper Ryan Rickelton. Mhambrey declared that he would not hold Chahar accountable for the lost chances.
Hardik Pandya, the captain, used a short delivery in the tenth over to get a top edge off Rovman Powell’s bat. The deep square leg was where the ball was headed.
While Robin Minz went out of sight, Chahar was positioned to make the catch. After the ball wound up between them, they got into a fight, and Pandya became angry.
“No one does it on purpose. You drop catches. It just happens, part of the game,” Mhambrey said in the post match press conference. “Not something that we’re going to dwell too much on, honestly.
“Yes, if you look at it in hindsight and say, ‘okay, fine, that catch [Powell] at that stage would have been 15, 20 runs extra’, yeah. But I’m not going to blame anyone out here. If you look at Corbin [Bosch], he took a brilliant catch [at point, to send back Powell off AM Ghazanfar]. So you compensate it for that, right?”

MI coach Paras Mhambrey speaks on collision
Tejasvi Dahiya’s bat gave Corbin Bosch a leading advantage later in the inning. Ryan Rickelton and Chahar were both attempting to capture the ball, which was in front of the fine leg. Rickelton was able to hang onto the grab despite a collision between the two teammates.
Chahar was only attempting to help the team after missing Powell’s catch, according to Mhambrey. He refused to put the blame for the collision on the pacer.
“There are too many things happening. Look at Deepak or anybody, I’m just saying you think about the game, right? You think about what how I can make a difference in maybe one over that’s left. So you constantly think [about contributing] and that can happen.
“You know, it’s not the first time that has happened and I’m sure it’s going to happen again. I would [not] blame, put Deepak under the train out here, definitely not,” said the former India bowling coach.
Struggle continues for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2026
Finn Allen, the KKR starter in form, was bowled over by Chahar earlier with the new ball, resulting in a single-digit score. After bowling three overs, he gave up twenty-three runs. He made fun of players pulling cash from their pockets to celebrate wickets following the early breakthrough.
MI lost the game by four wickets in the end. This was their ninth loss of the year. On May 24, they will play their next match at home against the Rajasthan Royals (RR).
