After getting British citizenship, former Pakistani bowler Mohammad Amir is now qualified to compete in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The left-arm fast bowler, who retired from international cricket for the second time following the 2024 T20 World Cup, had previously disclosed that he was working with his British-citizen wife, Narjis Khan, to get a UK passport.

Amir may now register as a British foreign player in franchise competitions, such as the IPL, as the procedure has been completed. After Amir published an Instagram story mentioning his alleged change in nationality status, the development became clear.

During an interview on the Pakistani talk program “Haarna Mana Hai,” Amir alluded to the prospect, stating that if he obtained his British passport, he would be qualified to play in the IPL starting in 2027. The 34-year-old also stated that, given the chance, he would want to play in the league.

“By next year, I will have the opportunity to play in the IPL, and if given the chance, then why not? I will play in the IPL,” Amir had said.

Why Pakistan players are ban to play in IPL?

Since the terror events in Mumbai, Pakistani players have been essentially prohibited from participating in the IPL. Even though a number of Pakistani celebrities, such as Shahid Afridi, Shoaib Akhtar, Shoaib Malik, and Sohail Tanvir, took part in the first IPL season in 2008, no Pakistani player has played in the competition since.

But after becoming a British citizen, former Pakistan all-rounder Azhar Mahmood became a rare exception. In 2012 and 2013, Mahmood played for the Punjab Kings; in 2015, he joined the Kolkata Knight Riders.

Mahmood played in the IPL despite the ban on Pakistani players because he held a British passport and registered as an English player rather than a Pakistani cricketer.

Mohammad Amir’s experience and new-ball skill

Amir is still one of the most well-known fast bowlers in franchise cricket, having participated in 36 Test matches, 61 ODIs, and 62 T20Is for Pakistan. If Amir formally joins the auction pool as a British citizen, teams may find him useful because of his reputation for swinging the new ball and performing well under pressures.
