Middlesex have turned to familiar territory in a bid to ease their wicketkeeping concerns after re-signing former academy graduate Adam Rossington on a short-term deal.

The 33-year-old returns to Lord’s more than a decade after departing the county, with Middlesex seeking experienced cover following Joe Cracknell’s finger injury sustained during the three-day Championship win at Old Trafford earlier this month.

Cracknell injury prompts swift action

Cracknell’s setback forced the club into the market for reinforcements, initially bringing in Yorkshire keeper Harry Duke on an emergency loan for Championship fixtures leading into the T20 Blast.

Rossington’s arrival, however, adds a seasoned option with a wealth of experience across the global game and gives Middlesex valuable depth during a demanding stretch of the season.

Rossington’s career comes full circle

His return marks a full-circle moment for a player who first emerged through the Middlesex academy before forging a successful county and franchise career elsewhere.

Having been released by Essex at the end of last season following a white-ball contract, Rossington had started the current campaign in the Hertfordshire Premier League with Totteridge Millhillians while also focusing on his coaching academy.

Despite stepping away from the county circuit temporarily, Rossington’s reputation as an explosive batter has continued to flourish overseas.

Earlier this year he enjoyed a prolific Bangladesh Premier League campaign, finishing among the competition’s leading run-scorers with 258 runs from only six innings. That rich form followed a century in the Nepal Premier League just weeks earlier.

Rossington’s resume also includes appearances in some of the world’s most prominent franchise tournaments including the SA20 with Sunrisers Eastern Cape, The Hundred with London Spirit, the Pakistan Super League and the ILT20 in the UAE.

County continue search ahead of Blast campaign

Middlesex remain hopeful that Cracknell will recover in time to return sometime in June, though the club are also believed to be exploring further options ahead of the Blast campaign.

Reports suggest the county are targeting an additional overseas signing capable of filling a top-order batting role while also offering wicketkeeping cover if required.
