- The 2026-27 BBL opener could be played in Chennai in December.
- CA had picked the venue out as potential host for the game earlier this year.
- Three teams said to be interested in playing the BBL opener in Chennai.
According to reports, the MA Chidambaram Stadium is on course to host the 2026-27 Big Bash League (BBL) opener. Cricket Australia (CA) had picked out Chennai as a potential venue for the game earlier this year.
A five-member delegation from CA attended CSK’s IPL match against SRH in Chennai. Following a meeting involving the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) and the Board for Control of Cricket in India (BCCI), CA have received positive feedback on their intentions of hosting next season’s BBL opener in Chennai.
BCCI president Mithun Manhas is also said to have been a part of the meeting.
The logistics of hosting the BBL opener in Chennai
The biggest issue with potentially hosting the BBL opener in India would be the distance between the two countries. Firstly, there are no direct flights between Australia and Chennai. Any flight with one stopover will take about 12 hours of travel. With travel time of over 24 hours, the players will also have less time for recovery between games.
Additionally, there is also the time difference between the two countries that need to be taken into account. Night games are likely to be problematic for broadcast in Australia. For example, the night games in the ongoing IPL only begin at 12:00 AM AEST. The day games are closer to prime time at 8:00 PM AEST.
The possibility of flooding in Chennai due to the rains in December, when the game is likely to take place, also needs to be taken into consideration.
3 teams ready to play in Chennai
Sydney Thunder, Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades are reportedly open to the prospect of playing in Chennai. However, one of the teams would need to play this as their home game, thus missing out on one of five games at their home stadium. This, in turn, could have a knock-on effect on their gate receipts and memberships.
That said, these teams could still have an opportunity to make inroads into what is widely considered the biggest cricketing market in the world – South Asia. Whether the match goes through, however, remains to be seen.
