- Proposed India vs Sri Lanka T20I series remains uncertain amid scheduling pressure
India are set to return to Sri Lanka later this year for a crucial two-match ICC World Test Championship series with both cricket boards reportedly identifying an August 15-27 window for the contest.
While official confirmation from the BCCI and Sri Lanka Cricket is still awaited the proposed schedule would place the series immediately after the conclusion of the Lanka Premier League on August 9.
Sri Lanka prepare for key World Test Championship fixtures
The red-ball clash carries major significance in the ongoing WTC cycle as both sides push to gain early momentum in the race for a place in the final.
Discussions around venues and match dates are still ongoing though preparations behind the scenes appear to be gathering pace.
Fresh uncertainty now surrounds the proposed three-match T20I series that officials initially planned alongside the Tests.
Organisers envisioned the shorter-format games as a fundraising initiative to support communities affected by Cyclone Ditwah last year but fitting them into India’s increasingly crowded calendar has become a major challenge for administrators.

Devajit Saikia visits Colombo amid cricket restructuring
The scheduling puzzle arrives at a delicate moment for Sri Lankan cricket. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia is currently in Sri Lanka as part of an ICC delegation reviewing developments within the island nation’s cricket structure following recent government intervention.
Sri Lankan president Anura Kumara Dissanayake oversaw the formation of an interim governing body known as the Sri Lanka Cricket Transformation Committee which has now taken charge of cricket operations.
Sources suggest discussions regarding India’s tour and the potential T20I fundraiser could feature prominently during Saikia’s meetings with officials in Colombo.
India vs Sri Lanka plans add to packed international calendar
For India the timing could hardly be more demanding. The team is staring at one of its busiest international stretches in recent memory with multiple bilateral tours and tournaments packed into a narrow window.
A white-ball tour of Bangladesh featuring three ODIs and three T20Is remains on the table despite lingering uncertainty after last year’s postponement amid political tensions between the two nations.
If confirmed the Bangladesh series would lead directly into a home campaign against the West Indies while the cricket competition at the 2026 Asian Games could further complicate the international schedule.
India will also travel to the UAE for a T20I series against Afghanistan adding another layer to the logistical challenge facing selectors and team management.
