Shubman Gill makes history, joins Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar in elite captaincy club

Shubman Gill, the captain of the Gujarat Titans, is in the rare group of batters who have captained multiple 500-run IPL seasons. He joins greats like David Warner, Virat Kohli, and Sachin Tendulkar.

Gill accomplished this achievement on Thursday at Eden Gardens in Kolkata during his GT’s IPL 2026 match against the Kolkata Knight Riders. He scored a scorching 85 in 49 balls with five fours and seven sixes at a strike rate of 173.47.

The GT skipper has scored 552 runs at an outstanding strike rate of 160.46 in 12 games this season, including five fifties. He is only two runs behind his opening partner, Sai Sudharsan (554 runs), as the second-highest scorer in the 2026 Indian Premier League.

Shubman Gill equals Kohli and Tendulkar’s rare IPL captaincy batting feat

Gill has scored more than 500 runs in two IPL seasons as captain. He scored 650 runs in 15 innings in the 2025 IPL and his strike rate that season was 155.87. Gill also finished as the tournament’s fourth-highest run scorer.

Only David Warner and K L Rahul have achieved this feat more often as IPL captains. Warner scored 848 runs in 2016, 641 runs in 2017, and 692 runs in 2018 for Sunrisers Hyderabad. Rahul scored 670 runs in 2020, 626 runs in 2021, and 616 runs in 2022. He achieved those numbers for Punjab Kings and Lucknow Super Giants.

Both Kohli (557 runs in 2015 and 973 in 2016) for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Tendulkar (618 runs in 2010 and 553 runs in 2011) for the Mumbai Indians have had two seasons as captain with more than 500 runs. With three fifties and a top score of 90, Gill has scored 356 runs in six innings at an average of 59.33 and a strike rate of 158.22 against his old side, KKR.

Gill has been in superb form thus far in the IPL 2026, combining aggressive purpose with traditional skill. His performance has been essential to GT’s continued success as a playoff spot is on the line .
