Virat Kohli has delivered a firm message about his future in one-day cricket, insisting he has no interest in fighting to justify his place in India’s squad ahead of the 2027 Cricket World Cup.

The former India captain, still regarded as one of the finest ODI batters the game has produced, said he would only continue if both he and the team management believed he could genuinely contribute to the side.

Kohli, who stepped away from Test and T20 international cricket, remains a central figure in India’s 50-over plans after another prolific run with the bat. The 37-year-old was instrumental in India’s Champions Trophy triumph last year and continues to produce remarkable numbers in the format.

Kohli draws firm line over India future

Speaking on the RCB Podcast, Kohli suggested he would rather walk away than remain in an environment where his commitment or value was constantly questioned.

“If I can add value to the environment and the environment believes I can add value then I will be there.

“But if I am in a situation where I have to keep proving my worth then that space is not for me.”

It was a statement delivered with the confidence of a player who has spent nearly two decades setting standards for Indian cricket. Kohli spoke passionately about the intensity he still brings to every match, from his preparation to his work in the field.

The India star remains driven by elite standards

Introducing his mindset towards the format during the same interview, Kohli explained how seriously he still approaches every ODI assignment.

“When I arrive to play I put my head down and work as hard as anyone.

“I prepare to field every single ball like it is the last ball of my career.”

Kohli also hinted at frustration with voices around the team, claiming some people were trying to “complicate” his position, although he stopped short of naming individuals.

Comparing cricket to a workplace environment, he questioned why people suddenly lose trust in a player’s ability after offering reassurances.

“Either tell me from day one that I am not needed or if you believe in me then stop questioning the way I operate,” Kohli said on the RCB Podcast.

Virat Kohli sends clear World Cup message with remarkable ODI record

Few players in cricket history possess the one-day record to match Kohli’s. Across 311 ODIs he has amassed 14,797 runs at an average of 58.71, second only to the legendary Sachin Tendulkar on the all-time list.

His reputation as the ultimate chase master remains unmatched. Kohli averages an astonishing 65.78 in the second innings of ODIs and his record in South Africa, host nation for the 2027 World Cup, makes for particularly encouraging reading. In 20 matches there he averages more than 76.

Kohli still looks ready for cricket’s biggest stage

For now, India’s modern batting icon appears far from finished. Judging by both his form and fierce determination, Kohli still believes he has plenty left to offer on cricket’s biggest stage.
