- England Lions name exciting fast-bowling prospects for South Africa A series
- Henry Crocombe rewarded after strong County Championship form
- Andrew Flintoff continues key role in England’s red-ball transition
England’s next wave of fast-bowling talent will be placed firmly under the spotlight later this month after the England Lions unveiled a youthful squad for two four-day clashes against South Africa A.
Among the names generating the strongest buzz are Sussex seamer Henry Crocombe and Lancashire quick Mitchell Stanley with both bowlers increasingly viewed as part of England’s long-term red-ball plans.
Crocombe earns recognition after impressive county start
Crocombe in particular has rapidly climbed the pecking order. The 24-year-old was recently highlighted by England director of cricket Rob Key as one of the standout county performers currently catching the selectors’ attention.
The Sussex paceman has already claimed 19 County Championship wickets this season and will feature in the second Lions fixture at Beckenham beginning on 29 May.
Stanley meanwhile continues to intrigue England’s management despite limited first-class experience. The Lancashire fast bowler has played only five senior matches yet has earned admirers inside the setup including Lions coach Andrew Flintoff who remains heavily involved in identifying emerging pace talent.
England continue red-ball pace transition
The opening match against South Africa A gets under way at Arundel on 22 May with the Lions squad reflecting England’s determination to refresh its seam attack following a period of transition.
The retirements of Stuart Broad, James Anderson and Chris Woakes over recent years have accelerated the search for new fast bowlers capable of thriving at Test level.
There are already signs of that changing guard. Ollie Robinson has returned to the senior fold after a lengthy absence while Hampshire prospect Sonny Baker earned a maiden Test call-up for the opening New Zealand match.
With Brydon Carse sidelined through injury and Jofra Archer set for a period of rest after the IPL, selectors appear keen to widen the pool of available quicks.

Crocombe and Stanley spearhead England Lions future plans
England’s revamped selection structure also continues to evolve. Former Durham director of cricket Marcus North has officially joined the national selection panel and his arrival has been warmly welcomed in county circles.
Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra, Durham head coach Ryan Campbell praised the appointment in glowing terms.
“Marcus has taken this club to another level. England cricket have made an unbelievably good choice.”
Campbell also dismissed any debate surrounding North’s Australian roots and told BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra that his long-standing commitment to county cricket and deep understanding of the English game made him an ideal fit.
“He’s as English as an Australian can be. He married an English lady, he has lived in the north east for years and he has invested in county cricket for years.
“He will test Brendon McCullum, Ben Stokes and Rob Key and will ask the right questions. He will be unbelievable.”
Alongside Crocombe and Stanley the Lions squad features several other seamers viewed as future international contenders. Hampshire’s Eddie Jack and Surrey’s Tom Lawes both return after touring Australia over the winter while Somerset left-armer Alfie Ogborne and Middlesex youngster Naavya Sharma continue their rise through the development pathway.

Flintoff remains central to Lions project
Warwickshire all-rounder Dan Mousley will captain the side in a squad containing a number of highly rated batting prospects including openers Ben McKinney and Asa Tribe.
Flintoff remains at the centre of the Lions project and reports continue to gather pace that the former England all-rounder is close to taking charge of Sydney Thunder in Australia’s Big Bash League.
Should the move materialise it would represent Flintoff’s first overseas franchise coaching role after two seasons with Northern Superchargers in The Hundred.
