At a glance:

  • Virat Kohli smashed a record-breaking century for Royal Challengers Bengaluru against Kolkata Knight Riders in Raipur.
  • Gavaskar highlighted Kohli’s ability to construct run-chases better than most batters in world cricket.
  • He also stated that Kohli’s consistency and records could take years for future players to match.

Virat Kohli’s record-breaking century for Royal Challengers Bengaluru at Raipur was praised by Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar, who stated that the veteran has demonstrated that the “old generation is still the best” despite the noise of the new generation of batters taking over.

Virat stunned the Raipur fans with a spectacular performance during a run-chase of 193 runs after two consecutive ducks. He not only smashed fours and sixes but also accumulated runs risk-free with singles and doubles.

With this century, he became the first Indian to surpass the 14,000 run milestone in Twenty20 cricket and make ten T20 hundreds.

Sunil Gavaskar explains why Virat is still best player

Gavaskar, a JioStar specialist, stated on top Sports’ “Cricket Live” that the top batter “knows how to construct a chase better than most” and that it will take a long time to replicate what he accomplishes.

“Virat Kohli was absolutely outstanding against KKR. He knows how to construct a chase better than most. While everyone was talking about this being the season of Gen Next, Kohli showed he is still around. He silenced the doubters with a century and moved to third in the Orange Cap race. He proved that the old generation is still the best.”

Another chapter in Kohli’s incredible T20 career that keeps redefining consistency was added with his most recent masterclass.  He also emphasised the extent of Kohli’s accomplishments, pointing out that although records are meant to be broken, some can take years to be contested.

“When it comes to T20 centuries, he is third on the list with 10, behind Chris Gayle and Babar Azam. But he is the fastest to 14,000 T20 runs and has nine IPL hundreds.

“Records are there to be broken, but it will take a very long time for anyone to match what Kohli keeps delivering, game after game, season after season. This hundred from Virat Kohli was one of those special moments that remind us of his greatness.”

Rovman Powell’s dropped catch becomes turning point

In addition, the former India captain highlighted a crucial moment that changed the outcome of the game. A difficult chance was put down by Rovman Powell early in Kohli’s innings. KKR would regret this mistake immediately in the ongoing IPL season.

“Before this RCB-KKR game, KKR’s efficiency with catches was still the best in the IPL this season. But this one hurt badly. Rovman Powell had the chance to dismiss Virat Kohli early.

“He went up high, timed his jump well, but the ball slipped out. You cannot drop Kohli early in his innings. He will make you pay every single time.”
