Hampshire have moved swiftly to bolster their squad by signing South African all-rounder Delano Potgieter on a short-term contract covering the next phase of the County Championship season and the Vitality Blast.

The 29-year-old arrives at the Utilita Bowl during a testing period for the club following Liam Dawson’s retirement from red-ball cricket. Hampshire currently sit bottom of Division One ahead of Friday’s meeting with reigning champions Nottinghamshire.

Hampshire seek fresh energy after Dawson retirement

Potgieter will be available for Hampshire’s next three County Championship fixtures as well as their Blast campaign, which begins away to Somerset at Taunton on May 22.

The left-handed batter and seam bowling all-rounder is also expected to feature in Championship matches against Surrey and Sussex in June. Fellow South African Tristan Stubbs is due to join the club later after completing his IPL stint with Delhi Capitals.

Hampshire will hope Potgieter can add balance and experience as they attempt to turn around a difficult start to the season.

Hampshire sign Delano Potgieter after impressive domestic form

Potgieter arrives in county cricket with an excellent record in South Africa’s domestic game. In 50 first-class matches he has scored 2,564 runs at an average of 44.20 including five centuries and nine fifties.

With the ball he has taken 128 wickets at 23.61, reinforcing his reputation as a genuine all-round performer.

He enjoyed a particularly strong CSA 4-Day Series campaign with Gauteng, scoring 606 runs at an average of 101 while also taking 10 wickets in seven matches. One of his standout innings came in the 2024 final when he produced an unbeaten 155.

Existing relationship with Russell Domingo could help transition

Potgieter already knows Hampshire head coach Russell Domingo from their time together at Gauteng, where Domingo guided the side during the recent domestic season.

That existing connection could help the South African settle quickly into English conditions as Hampshire search for momentum in both red-ball and white-ball cricket.

In T20 cricket, Potgieter has scored 1,329 runs and claimed 49 wickets in 97 matches. His best bowling figures of 5 for 10 came for MI Cape Town against Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the SA20, highlighting the impact Hampshire hope he can make during the Blast.
