  • Bangladesh target fourth straight Test win over Pakistan
  • Babar Azam returns after missing first Test through injury
  • Nahid Rana’s pace attack continues to trouble Pakistan batters

Bangladesh head into the second Test against Pakistan with belief surging through the dressing room and momentum firmly at their backs. After a commanding victory in Dhaka, the hosts are embracing a bold new identity in red-ball cricket and Pakistan now find themselves under growing pressure to respond.

The transformation in Bangladesh’s approach has been striking. In recent years adversity often pushed them into survival mode. This time they met difficult moments head on. Their batters absorbed pressure with patience before switching gears with confidence while the bowling attack hunted relentlessly rather than settling for control.

Against a Pakistan side struggling for rhythm and certainty the contrast could hardly be sharper.

Bangladesh finding confidence in red-ball cricket

Bangladesh’s ability to adapt to varying conditions remains one of their greatest strengths. The Mirpur surface offered assistance to seamers but still retained enough slowness for spin to influence the game. That balance suited the hosts perfectly.

Nahid Rana once again emerged as the headline act. The young quick generated serious pace throughout long spells and unsettled Pakistan with aggressive lengths and sharp bounce. Supported by Taskin Ahmed and Ebadot Hossain, Bangladesh carried constant threat with the new ball while still maintaining spin depth through Taijul Islam and Mehidy Hasan Miraz.

That versatility has given Bangladesh a complete look as a Test side.

Under pressure Pakistan turn to returning Babar

Pakistan continue to wrestle with compromises across both batting and bowling. Their batting order has lacked consistency and experience while the attack has struggled to build sustained pressure. The return of Babar Azam offers an emotional lift but Pakistan need far more than reassurance from their former captain. They need runs.

Babar remains the central figure in Pakistan’s hopes despite an uneven run in Test cricket over the past two years. He showed signs of revival in white-ball formats with a prolific PSL campaign and an ODI century in Sri Lanka late last year. Yet the longer format continues to test him. Promising starts have too often faded and his average since the beginning of 2024 sits below expectations for a player of his stature.

Even so his presence changes the mood around the side.

Pakistan are expected to reshuffle the batting order to accommodate him with Shan Masood likely to move to the top alongside Azan Awais. There could also be changes in the pace attack with Khurram Shahzad pushing for inclusion.

Nahid Rana leads Bangladesh’s bowling charge

Still the visitors arrive in Sylhet carrying the burden of recent history. They have now lost their last three Tests against Bangladesh and another defeat would mark an unwanted first in Test cricket history with no side ever having lost four consecutive matches to Bangladesh before.

For the hosts there is growing excitement around a team beginning to believe it belongs among the stronger Test nations. Mominul Haque continues to anchor the batting with calm authority while Mushfiqur Rahim and Litton Das provide experience and attacking flair.

Much of the anticipation however surrounds Nahid Rana. His fiery spell in the final session in Dhaka, including figures of 5 for 40, captured imaginations across the country and reinforced the growing reputation of Bangladesh’s pace attack. Even with discussions around workload management it would be a surprise if Bangladesh left him out for such an important contest.

Rain threat looms over Sylhet Test

Weather may yet become a major factor in Sylhet with rain forecast across the opening days. Both teams were forced indoors during training on Friday and conditions remain uncertain heading into the match.

But regardless of interruptions Bangladesh have already shown they are prepared to shape games on their own terms. Pakistan now face the difficult task of stopping a side playing with confidence, clarity and increasing ambition.
