- Ben Raine leads County Championship fantasy scoring with 1,294 points
- England stars return but Division Two value picks continue to shine
The County Championship season continues to throw up twists for fantasy managers and this week’s edition of ‘The Cricket Draft’ is shaping up to be another fascinating balancing act between form, reputation and risk.
James Rew faces growing pressure at the top
One of the biggest talking points surrounds young Somerset batter James Rew. Once viewed as a dependable fantasy asset, the talented left-hander endured a miserable outing last week with a return of -16 points. Fantasy managers have reacted quickly with Rew becoming the most transferred-out player ahead of the new round after being released by 6% of clubs.
His move to the top of the order has sparked debate. Somerset’s experiment did little to inspire confidence during their dramatic two-wicket defeat to Glamorgan where Rew managed just four runs in the first innings before falling for a duck in the second. In truth, only Tom Abell emerged with much credit as Somerset struggled badly with the bat.
Yet fantasy cricket often rewards patience. Rew remains one of the brightest young batting prospects on the county circuit and a home fixture against a Sussex side dealing with seam bowling injuries could provide the perfect reset. There is also a feeling that opening may simply require an adjustment period for the 21-year-old.
Still, uncertainty lingers. Somerset have developed a reputation for chopping and changing at the top of the order and this week’s Cricket Draft podcast highlighted the remarkable statistic that the club has used 52 different opening partnerships since Marcus Trescothick retired in 2019. Another reshuffle would hardly come as a surprise.

Ryan Higgins and Ben Raine continue to dominate
Elsewhere, the all-rounders continue to dominate fantasy conversations and Ryan Higgins has surged back into the spotlight. Higgins has become one of the safest captaincy picks in The Cricket Draft thanks to his consistent involvement with both bat and ball. When points are needed, the Middlesex man rarely stays quiet for long.
Ben Raine and George Hill have also strengthened their claims as premium options. Raine in particular has become a fantasy machine despite batting lower down the order. His bowling output has more than compensated and the Durham all-rounder currently leads the overall points standings with a staggering 1,294 points at an average of 258 per game.
The trend of lower-order players delivering huge returns has become one of the defining themes of the campaign. Sussex’s Ollie Robinson added another 516 points in the latest round as bowlers and tail-enders continue to cash in under early-season conditions.
For many fantasy managers, going without Higgins or Raine now feels dangerously close to overthinking. The lure of England stars is understandable but avoiding high-profile names like Ben Stokes and Harry Brook could yet prove the smarter strategic play particularly with Division Two performers quietly piling up points week after week.
Martin Andersson emerges as a surprise package
Another intriguing name climbing the ranks is Derbyshire’s Martin Andersson. The former Middlesex man has emerged as one of the surprise success stories of the season with 1,050 points despite costing only £5.9m.
His explosive opening match accounted for nearly half of that tally and while sustaining those heights may prove difficult, Andersson has already become one of the best-value picks in the game.

Fantasy cricket tips for England star selections
Attention will also turn to the returning England contingent ahead of the upcoming Test series against New Zealand. Joe Root, Ben Stokes and Harry Brook all appear fit and available which instantly adds intrigue for fantasy managers weighing up whether to gamble on star quality.
Stokes perhaps stands out most after an encouraging county return in which he claimed two wickets and looked sharp with the ball. Brook has also been rolling his arm over after sending down 18 overs in the last round although his workload remains uncertain.
Big names often tempt fantasy managers into emotional decisions but as another County Championship gameweek arrives, the smartest selections may once again come from the relentless county specialists quietly building points totals beneath the spotlight.
